Going further, faster – together
In September, 2015, the world agreed on a set of universal Sustainable Development Goals. One of those goals – Goal #7 – calls for us to secure affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all. To meet the Goal #7 – and the other Sustainable Development Goals – in the context of the ambition of the Paris Agreement, we need an energy transition that will drive the economic transformation we’ve called for.
Then in December, in Paris, 195 nations negotiated an historic Climate Agreement – one that declared that not only do we need to stay “well below 2 °C” – we need to move towards a 1.5 °C world. Again, this was a unanimous decision. On November 4th, 2016 the Paris Agreement on climate change entered into force. UN Secretary-General Ban KI-moon has called it “a new covenant for the future”.
Promises made must be promised kept.
The global energy transition requires a rapid increase in energy productivity, a new generation of institutions to manage our energy systems, an integrated approach to energy that embraces centralized and decentralized sources, and ever increasing share of renewables in the mix. And the energy transition must be a ‘just’ transition. We must not leave anyone behind.
It is unconscionable that in 2016 there are more than 1 billion people who still have little or no access to electricity and over 3 billion people who do not have access to clean cooking.
Sustainable Energy for All is driving the kind of action we need to put the world on a “well below 2C pathway” with sustainable energy while lifting over a billion people out of poverty in support of SDG 7 and the Paris Agreement.
As a global platform, Sustainable Energy for All empowers leaders to broker partnerships and unlock finance to achieve universal access to sustainable energy, as a contribution to a cleaner, just and prosperous world for all. We marshal evidence, benchmark progress, amplify the voices of our Partners and tell stories of success and connect stakeholders.
We need to have a laser-sharp focus on where we can make the greatest progress in the least amount of time.
We are developing a series of ‘heat-maps’ to help show leaders where they can make the biggest and fastest inroads towards these goals. These ‘heat maps’ also show where progress is happening – so that we can replicate the success of others and help leaders in government, business and civil society to make the right choices.
We know where we need to get to. By regularly taking stock of where we are - in 2018, 2020 and 2024 – we can help leaders stay on track. The clean energy transition offers us an historic economic opportunity for growth and job-rich development - and we must leave no one behind.
In our shared and unwavering commitment to move towards this better world, Sustainable Energy for All exists to help leaders go further, faster – together.
